Japanese red Oni demon mask made from washi papier-mâché
Made in Japan using the traditional hariko technique, this Japanese red Oni mask is crafted from washi paper and clay, just like the masks found at neighbourhood festival stalls.
The Oni, a demon from Japanese folklore, takes centre stage at Setsubun, the festival celebrating the arrival of spring in early February. On this day, one family member wears the mask whilst the others throw roasted soya beans at them, shouting ‘Oni wa soto, fuku wa uchi’ (‘Out with the demons, in with good fortune’).
Its adjustable elastic strap and eye slits also mean you can wear it to a festival, a themed party or a photo shoot. Hung on the wall, it adds an authentic touch to your décor and makes an original gift for a fan of Japanese culture.
