Whereas in Europe we imagine a face in the moon, the Japanese see a rabbit busily pounding rice to make mochi, without ever taking a day off. This legend is associated with tsukimi, the contemplation of the autumn full moon, which is celebrated by enjoying small rice dumplings whilst gazing up at the sky. The momiji – those Japanese maple trees that blaze with colour in October and November – complete this Japanese furoshiki, which is entirely dedicated to autumn.
Its shantung cotton ties securely around a box of mochi or a case of candied chestnuts, making for a perfectly themed seasonal gift. Tied at the corners, it can also be transformed into a miniature bag for carrying a bento or some fruit for lunch.
