Japanese furoshiki, 100% cotton, 50x50 cm, printed with hanabi fireworks
In Japanese, fireworks are called hanabi, literally ‘fire flowers’ – a lovely name for a tradition that has lit up the archipelago’s summers since the Edo period. This Japanese furoshiki is called ‘sawayaka hanabi’, meaning ‘refreshing fireworks’: in Japan, people favour cool colours in summer to feel a little less overwhelmed by the heat. The little goldfish featured on it, known as ‘kingyo’, are also a symbol of the summer season.
Its shantung cotton, with its soft drape and subtle texture, ties easily around a bento box or a water bottle, and makes lovely summer gift wrapping.
