In Japanese, the word for ‘cosmos’ is written using the kanji for ‘autumn’ and ‘cherry tree’: for the Japanese, it is rather like the sakura of the autumn foliage season. Introduced to Japan during the Meiji era, this flower has won over the country to such an extent that its fields attract crowds of walkers every autumn.
On this Japanese furoshiki, designed by the Hamamonyo workshop in Yokohama, it shares the limelight with gokigen cats – in other words, cats in high spirits. Made from soft yet slightly textured shantung cotton, this 50x50 cm square can be used to wrap a bento box, decorate a wall or even wrap gifts in an eco-friendly way.
