This Japanese furoshiki bears the signature of Hamamonyo, a Yokohama-based brand renowned for its fabrics featuring vibrant and whimsical patterns. Its name dates back to the public baths of the Edo period, where this square of fabric was spread out to store personal belongings (furo means ‘bath’, shiki ‘to spread out’).
It is cut from shantung cotton, a fabric with a slightly irregular weave, which has enough body to form neat knots. Its 50x50 cm size is perfect for wrapping a bento box, a bottle or a small gift: the fabric then becomes a gift in its own right.
In Japan, cherry blossoms are synonymous with hanami, those spring picnics under the trees… enough to give your lunch break a touch of spring.
