Tsukisamu Anpan from Sapporo, Japanese cake filled with Hokkaido azuki bean paste (koshian) – 67 g
In 1906, in Tsukisamu, a district of Sapporo, a confectioner heard about the anpan that was all the rage in Tokyo, but without knowing the recipe. He created his own version, consisting of a thin layer of dough filled with anko, more akin to a mooncake than a brioche. Five years later, soldiers building the road between Hiragishi and Tsukisamu discovered these cakes and quickly took a liking to them. In fact, the road is still known today as the ‘Anpan Road’. Honma has been making its Tsukisamu Anpan ever since, with smooth koshian made from Hokkaido azuki beans wrapped in a thin layer of dough.
