The Daruma arrives with white eyes, and this is intentional. The tradition behind this good-luck charm, which originated around the Shōrinzan temple in Takasaki, dictates that you set a goal, colour in one eye to seal your commitment, and then colour in the second once the goal has been achieved. These two tea caddies follow the same principle: each comes with a sheet of stickers featuring the two pupils and a small ema – the shrine votive tablet – on which to write down the goal you’re aiming for. Keep your tea tin in plain sight – the Daruma works through daily reminders rather than magic!
As for the rest, the double lid with an inner plastic seal makes it the perfect container for loose tea, ground coffee, sugar or sweets – in short, any products you wish to protect effectively from air and light.
