Japanese fūrin wind chime in cast iron, blue Shizuku bell
Beneath the bell of this cast iron Japanese wind chime, a small clapper connected to the tanzaku – the strip of paper that catches the wind – strikes the side of the bell as soon as the air moves. The cast iron produces a high-pitched, clear note, with a resonance that lingers for several seconds after each chime. More durable than a glass model, this cast iron fūrin is happy outdoors too, under a canopy or a covered balcony. Indoors, a slightly open window or the breeze from a fan is enough to make it chime. In Japan, it is hung up as soon as the first heat of summer arrives.
