This Japanese cast-iron wind chime is cast in Ōshū, in Iwate Prefecture, by a company that has been working with iron since 1852. The colour is called ‘mugi’, meaning wheat. Cast iron has an advantage over glass for this sort of object: it won’t break if the wind chime falls, or if a real cat decides to take a closer look. Hanging indoors, it can be heard every time a window is opened. It measures 6.9 cm and weighs 140 g: it fits into a small box and can be hung anywhere.
