Black Japanese chawan bowl, Japanese pottery from Toki with a hand-carved kanna design
With a capacity of 300 ml and a diameter of 12 cm, this Japanese bowl is perfect for a portion of rice, soup, a morning yoghurt or a fruit salad. Its ‘kanna’ decoration takes its name from the craftsman’s tool – a word meaning ‘plane’: Shigemichi Tabata presses it against the rotating piece to carve regular grooves by hand, into which the fingers fit comfortably. This Japanese pottery is crafted at the Kinshō kiln in Toki, Gifu Prefecture, and is dishwasher-safe and microwave-safe for reheating. In Japan, it is called a chawan, literally ‘tea bowl’, although it is mainly used for eating rice.
