Paper model of a lucky Daruma doll in the colours of Hokusai’s ‘Red Fuji’
This lucky Daruma takes its colours from ‘Red Fuji’, one of Hokusai’s most famous Japanese woodblock prints. In it, the artist captured a very real phenomenon: at the end of summer, at sunrise, the mountain is sometimes tinged with an orange-red hue. This colour was perfectly suited to the Daruma, traditionally painted red – a shade reputed in the Edo period to ward off illness.
This faceted paper model arrives laser-cut, with double-sided adhesive tape cut to the width of the flaps: all you need is a craft knife to get started. In just under an hour, you’ll have a daruma that fits in the palm of your hand – perfect for a corner of your desk or for wishing a loved one good luck as they embark on a new project.
