Japanese craft kit for making a Hina Matsuri hanging decoration from Yuzen washi paper
Every 3 March, Japanese families celebrate Hina Matsuri, the Girls’ Festival, by displaying dolls believed to watch over their health and happiness.
With this Japanese DIY kit, you can create your own version of this tradition: a hanging wreath adorned with little origami dolls. The pieces are cut from Yuzen washi paper. For the faces, you have two options: the classic imperial couple or a slightly more playful rabbit version. Allow about an hour for folding and gluing – perfect for a family activity or as a gift for a fan of Japanese paper.
A little tip from tradition: in Japan, the dolls are quickly put away after the celebration, otherwise the girls’ marriages might be delayed… But feel free to keep the wreath a little longer!
