Japanese wooden kokeshi doll in shades of orange, 9 cm, hand-painted and signed
The body of this kokeshi transitions seamlessly from bare wood to a deep orange, with the wood grain showing through the colour. In Japanese, this shade of orange is called daidai, named after a bitter orange whose fruit remains on the branch for several years: several generations coexist on it, and the word therefore also means ‘from generation to generation’. This resonates beautifully with the rich tradition embodied by this doll, handmade using traditional techniques. Whilst the colour gradient is contemporary, look at the head: the fringe, the red flower and the face of this Japanese wooden doll all adhere to traditional conventions. It is hand-painted and signed on the base by Yūsuke Satō, a member of the family that has run the Iwaki workshop since 1926.
Below is a video illustrating the Kokeshi-making process (the model shown in the video is not the same as the one on sale).
