Japanese noren curtain in brown openwork fabric with an Ichimatsu chequered pattern
The Ichimatsu check pattern takes its name from an 18th-century Kabuki actor, Sanogawa Ichimatsu, who liked to wear this chequered pattern on his hakama. The public embraced the pattern, and the name has stuck ever since. Here, it is not printed but woven directly into the fabric, giving it a textured feel and a finish reminiscent of hemp. Made in Japan from polyester, this noren is hung on a door or at the entrance to a hallway to separate two spaces without completely partitioning them off: air and light continue to pass through, whilst the view is slightly more restricted. The brown colour blends naturally with wood or a modern interior.
To separate the two panels of your noren, take a pair of scissors and cut along the dotted line in the centre of the noren. It will not fray. This allows you to choose the height of the opening in your noren.
