Oshie is a decorative art form that originated in the Edo period. It involves covering small, padded shapes with fabric to create three-dimensional images, as seen on the decorative hagoita paddles sold every December at Sensō-ji Temple in Tokyo. This Japanese craft kit introduces you to this technique using chirimen fabric, a lightweight Japanese crepe that softens the shapes. The foam templates come pre-cut, ready to be covered with fabric and then assembled onto the backing. The design combines two symbols of the Japanese summer: the goldfish and the asagao, or morning glory. This flower, which blooms in the early morning, was already all the rage during the Edo period. In about three-quarters of an hour, you’ll have a small hanging picture, which will also make a lovely gift for anyone who loves sewing or Japanese culture.
