In Tokyo, the old working-class neighbourhoods are known as shitamachi, such as Yanaka, famous for its narrow streets where cats roam freely. These cat stickerscapture the atmosphere of these streets: a kissaten (a retro Japanese café), the barber’s rotating sign, a bakery and even a maneki neko, the lucky cat that beckons customers at the entrance to shops. The Japanese manufacturer prints them on washi, a traditional paper with a soft texture.
