This Japanese pencil case by Raymay Fujii, a Japanese manufacturer of stationery, combines two storage compartments within a single unit. The main compartment opens wide at the front, like a tray, so you can see your felt-tip pens and highlighters at a glance, whilst a slim mesh pocket keeps erasers, rulers or USB sticks separate. This dual-compartment pencil case holds up to 30 pens, and its double-slider fastening opens from either side. Lightweight and made of polyester, this pencil case fits just as easily into a school bag as it does into an office briefcase.

In Japan, the pencil case is still known as ‘fudebako’, meaning ‘brush box’ – a name inherited from the days when people wrote with brushes. The brushes have gone, but the name has stayed.
