Set of two Mingei no Sato Japanese cups made from Mino ceramic, 300 ml, in a wooden box, made in Japan

These Japanese cups are designed as ‘free cups’, meaning they are not associated with any particular drink: you can use them for your morning coffee, afternoon tea, or an evening beer or sake. These two cups come from the workshops of Mino, in Gifu Prefecture, the region which today accounts for nearly half of all tableware produced in Japan. Their slender shape is shaped by hand, and no two cups from different sets are exactly alike – that is the very appeal of craftsmanship. The name of the series, Mingei no Sato, means ‘the village of mingei’ – those Japanese folk arts closely associated with handmade everyday objects.
