Japanese poster of Inari and Kitsune shrine

You are standing at the entrance to Fushimi Inari-taisha in Kyoto, the main shrine of the goddess Inari, deity of growth and rice. Her messengers, two Kitsune foxes, stand guard under the torii gate, a portal marking the boundary between the secular world and the sacred space of the shrine.
